The Wine

Last fall we offered a few select barrels of our 2008 Armagh Vineyard Syrah as a limited release vineyard designated wine. This year it was a couple barrels of Majik Vineyard that stuck out for us. We invite you to get to know another one of the distinctive components of our Sonoma Coast Syrah bottling. This 1-acre block of Syrah vines planted in the west Sebastopol hills struggles to ripen in even the very warmest of years. 2009 was not a warm year. This gorgeously aromatic naturally low alcohol, 100% Syrah epitomizes the authentic cold climate fringe of west Sonoma county.

The Winemaking

  • 100% Indigenous Fermentations
  • 33% Whole Cluster
  • 66% De-Stemmed Fruit
  • 18 month elevage in neutral French Oak barrels
  • 100% Syrah
  • 100% Majik Vineyard
  • pH – 3.66
  • Alc by Vol – 12.7%
  • 98 cases bottled

Tasting Note

Fragrant Syrah aromas of lilac, pepper and olives dominate the transparent perfume of this wine. The palate is medium-weight with savory Syrah elements of herbs, gamy meat jus, blackberries and tar. By no means a big wine, this is Syrah that carries depth and concentration without compromising the delicate crunchy aspect of cold climate grape growing.

Disclaimer

This is an authentic cold climate Syrah that showcases the diversity of coastal California. This isn’t a statement or a wine looking to fit a niche…this is Syrah as Syrah has been bottled for centuries…. nothing put in and nothing taken away.
